I recently watched an interview with two actors, Ezra Miller and Claudia Kim, for the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Ezra Miller plays Credence Barebone and Claudia Kim plays Nagini. I haven’t watched the Fantastic Beasts movie (and I don’t think I’m planning on seeing it), but that’s beside the point. The point of this post is to call out the absolutely terrible reporter who conducts this interview.
The reason I’m actually writing this blog post is because the reporter disabled all comments on the Youtube video and limited her comments on her Instagram page (which I think is such a cowardly move) in order to filter out messages about this particular interview as it received a lot of backlash. This interview currently has around five-hundred thumbs ups and a whopping five thousand thumbs down, so I’m happy that the majority of people who watched this found it problematic as well.
One of the major problems in this interview is that the reporter only asks Ezra Miller questions, completely ignoring Claudia Kim’s presence. It becomes so bad that Miller actually begins asking Kim the questions himself. At one point, he literally tells the interviewer to ask Kim a question, which she does with hesitation. There then is no follow up on Kim’s answer, and instead, she turns the question and her attention right back onto Miller.
What infuriates me the most is the fact that the two out of the three questions the reporter asks Claudia Kim is about her English speaking skills.
First, she would have noticed that Kim’s English is perfect if she actually asked her a question and heard her speak. Second, I find it extremely problematic and racist that she asks the Asian actress about how well she can speak English. It almost seems as if the interviewer is trying to make Kim prove that she can speak English. In addition, Asian actors already have such little representation in Hollywood, but when they do, they are defined by their “Asian-ness.” So this interviewer just further perpetrates this problem by asking her “So you read [the Harry Potter series] in English?” and then following up with “Oh, so you did speak English?” (literally the two out of the three questions she asked her), reducing an Asian actress who landed a huge movie role to just her Asian identity. She then proceeds to call Korean “a secret magical language” after Kim and Miller say a few words in Korean. Jesus.
So, you can obviously see a very clear contrast between the interviewer’s questions and behavior towards Claudia Kim versus Ezra Miller as she only asks Miller substantial questions about the actual movie itself. Though “substantial” might be pushing it as a lot of the questions a) don’t make sense b) are just plain stupid. But the point is, she actually asks him questions about the movie and questions that don’t make him prove his English speaking skills.
Overall, I think this “reporter” needs to work on her interviewing/peopling skills so in the future, she isn’t ignorant and rude to the actual people she’s interviewing and those who are watching the video.
